Antibodies are also known as immunoglobulins (Ig) which are a form of protein. The body produces antibodies in response to antigens, which are substances that can cause damage or foreign particles not recognized by the body immune system such as Parasites, bacteria, cancer cells and viruses which are examples of antigens.
Antibodies are not only produce in the presence of foreign particles, autoimmune disorders, can occure when the immune system accidentally attacks and destroys healthy body tissue(own cells or tissues). The four types of antibodies are IgA, IgG, IgM, and IgE, all have specific functions to combat antigens in the body.
IgA
It's protect the surfaces of the body susceptible to foreign substances or particles.Located in areas such as in the nose, eyes, ears, digestive tracts, tears, saliva and blood. IgA antibodies are also found in breast milk, where they are passed along to babies to help strengthen their immune system. 10 to 15 % of antibodies in the body are IgA.
IgG
All the body fluids contain IgG antibody that is between 75 % to 80 % of the antibodies in the body are IgG, They are the smallest types of antibodies and are vital in warding off both bacterial and viral infections. They are also the only antibodies that may pass through the placenta in pregnant women inorder to protect the fetus. They are mostly involve in Chronic infections.
IgM
They are the largest antibody and account for 5 % to 10 % of antibodies. They are found in the lymph fluid and blood. IgM antibodies are the first line of defense when an infection is detected and They help stimulate the immune system to combat foreign substances. Here Ig M is mostly present in acute infections.
IgE
They trigger the body to respond against foreign matter like pollen, spores, pet dander and fungus. Present in the lungs, skin and mucous membranes. IgE levels are typically high in people with allergies. They may also be present where there are allergic reactions to medicines and milk.
